Interested Versus Interesting

“No one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care.” –Theodore Roosevelt

Are you interested or interesting? Yes, that’s this week’s message. I bring it to you because earlier this week I had the opportunity to be one of the speakers at the British Swim School National Conference.

According to the dictionary, interested means showing curiosity or concern about something or someone, while interesting means arousing curiosity or interest; holding or catching the attention. Which do you strive to be?

My breakout session was based on the teachings of John Maxwell’s book “Everyone Communicates, Few Connect.”  A simple concept with a powerful message, connecting increases your influence in every situation, connecting is all about others, and connecting goes beyond words.

We spent much of our time together discussing the importance of listening and the pitfalls some of us fall into. Mostly because humans enjoy the sound of their own voices and they value the merit of their own opinions.

Would you believe me if I told you that all the answers lie within the person you are communicating with? Whether they are your client, staff member, family or friend.

Next time you are communicating with someone, try the 80/20 rule. Listen 80% of the time and talk 20% of the time. For the record, the 20% is devoted to asking questions to illuminate ideas and help you better understand.

The biggest mistakes by most human beings: Listening Half, Understanding Quarter, Telling Double.

I ask you again are you interested or interesting? Do you believe everyone communicates, few connect? I would love to know your thoughts. Feel free to email me at info@ninaobier.com
